The municipality of Valsequillo in Gran Canaria, with a surface of 39.15 km2 is located at a distance of 24 kilometers from the island capital, approximately 18 kilometers from the Airport and about 60 kilometers from the tourist area of Playa del Inglés. Valsequillo is seated on the foothills of the Telde Basin, at a height over sea level standing between 300 and 1800 meters. To the north it borders with the municipalities of Santa Brígida and Vega de San Mateo; with Telde, Ingenio and Agüimes to the south, at the header of the Guayadeque Ravine; with Telde to the east; and to the west with Vega de San Mateo and San Bartolomé de Tirajana.
An impressive erosion crater, the Tenteniguada Crater, serves as a refuge against the Central Massif of Gran Canaria. This crater, with great scarps arranged in semi-circular fashion and essentially carved from volcanic build-up and lavas from the ‘Roque Nublo Cycle’, acts as a rainwater collection basin, with the tributary ravines of the Telde Basin configuring this crater-form structure. A series of rocks, of phonolitic composition, crowning the scarps (Roque Saucillo and Roques de Tenteniguada) stand out in this spectacular landscape.
And once at the summit it is the volcanic crater of Los Marteles that is set apart from the others given its landscape and geological importance.
The middle span of the Telde Basin presents a series of ravines that are far more wedged in, as is the case with the San Miguel Ravine, this being due to its partial backfill with recent volcanic crevices that cover the ancient banks. Currently these crevices, which are sectioned by the new drainage network, compose a series of lava terraces that are dedicated to agricultural use.
Gorgeous tributaries are to be highlighted along this span, as is the case with the Cernícalos Ravine or the San Roque Ravine.
The climatic characteristics of Valsequillo can be summarized in the occasional influence of the sea of clouds that is generated by the trade winds and by the existence of relatively scarce precipitations (annual average of 400 cm3) and a mean temperature under 20º C.
